The Giver

This book is currently on Amazon’s Essential Books for Young Adults. The main character, Jonas, lives in a Utopian society where everyone is happy and taken care of. However, as Jonas approaches his birthday, changes start happening in his life. He begins to question the way his society handles issues. He begins to wonder what he can do about things with which he disagrees. How can a 12 year old make a difference? This book also has strong Biblical references and fantastic teaching moments. It is a very easy read but contains deep discussion topics.

John Milton wrote that,
“The end then of learning is to repair the ruins of our first parents by regaining to know God aright and out of that knowledge to love Him, to imitate Him, to be like Him, as we may the nearest by possessing in our souls of true virtue, which being united to the heavenly grace of faith makes up the highest perfection.” [i]
Milton understood that an education was essential and that education extended beyond the Bible to the academic areas.  Proverbs even stresses a good education.  It is my desire to help build that solid foundation of academics so that students will be successful in fulfilling God’s will for their lives.
